Chapter 9

Endo straightened up and pushed the doors only to be met with resistance.

He looked up at the small lookout areas and then back again at the doors, “I’m sure they saw me approaching…”

He gave a few heavy knocks.

Silence.

He gave a few more heavy knocks.

More silence.

“Forget the secret knock, have we?” The Captain asked sarcastically.

Endo shook his head in frustration and gazed up again at the lookout nests. He backed up far enough and waved his hands.

Captain Tyzon put his face in his hand in disbelief.

“Is anybody inside?” Ayda inquired. This was odd. There was a secret tower in the middle of nowhere and nobody appeared to be inside.

Captain Tyzon grumbled, “Endo, we don’t have time for your games.”

“No, there must be a reason for this…” Endo raced back to the door and beckoned to the Captain, “Help me get this open.”

He slammed his shoulder against the doors, the intensity of it bringing a concerned look to Captain Tyzon’s face. Seeming to realize Endo was serious, and not putting on some kind of charade, he too put his shoulder to the doors and the two began pressing their weight against the heavy wood.

“It’s locked from the inside. Don’t you think someone would have come to let us in by now?” Captain Tyzon asked as he slammed his shoulder into the thick wood.

“Just get these doors open,” Endo ordered through his teeth.

Ayda grabbed the glass star and glanced up at the doors. Suddenly, an idea washed over her, and she resisted smiling. She could help. She ran into the center of the knights and pushed the doors with all her might.

Nothing happened.

Ayda gazed down at the little star. “I thought this made me more powerful? I thought it would do what I wanted it to?”

Captain Tyzon paused for a moment. “It doesn’t exactly work like that.”

“The Starlight is not a convenient tool you can just pull out whenever you’re in a pinch,” Endo snapped as he shoved her aside and continued pressing on.

Ayda stumbled over with the force of his push, gasping as she felt more pus ooze down her neck.

Her fist slowly clenched, her grown-out nails digging into her soft palms as she watched the knights trying to gain entrance. The fury filled her mind as she felt the sting of every bully who had ever pushed her into walls or down to the ground.

Ayda climbed to her feet and ran towards the door as both knights backed up to try again and screamed as she hit the doors as hard as she could.

Both wooden doors instantly exploded and were ripped completely off their hinges along with part of the onyx stone frame.

A blackness flooded over the field…

A tremendous sound echoed as the doors blasted into the opposing stone wall, shattering something solid.

Everyone froze.

She moved her chin just an inch towards Endo, “Don’t. Shove. Me,” she growled.

Endo and Captain Tyzon glanced at each other in tense silence. She stepped away from the entrance and after a few cautious seconds, Endo entered the tower.
